Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA) is the closest airport to Virginia Tech that offers commercial passenger service. Connections can be made through several East Coast hubs including Atlanta (ATL), New York LaGuardia (LGA), Philadelphia (PHI), Charlotte (CLT), Washington Dulles (IAD), and Chicago O’Hare (ORD).
The Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA) is about 40 miles northeast of Blacksburg. The following ground transportation services from ROA to Blacksburg are available.
- The SmartWay Bus runs every hour from 6 am to 7 pm on weekdays. The trip takes about one hour and costs $4 each way. The exact fare in cash is required. (Note: Weekend SmartWay Bus service is extremely limited and there will be no service on Monday, September 3 because it is a national holiday.)
- Several taxi service providers offer service between ROA and Blacksrbug, including B Early Cab Service which offers online quotes. It is recommended that you arrange for taxi service in advance of your trip.
- Rental cars are available from a number of agencies within the airport. The VT campus is an easy 40 minute drive from the airport.
Charlotte International Airport, in Charlotte, NC, has direct flights from and to Europe and is about 3 hrs from Blacksburg by car.
Dulles International Airport, outside of Washington DC, has direct flights from and to Europe, Asia, and South America, and is about 4 hrs from Blacksburg by car.
Blacksburg is located just off of Interstate-81, one of the major north/south highways for the eastern United States.
